FAQs: FAQ

What can MyoCentric do for me?

MyoCentric provides individualized therapy which includes exercises and neuromuscular re-education of the oral and facial muscles. This promotes positive growth patterns, correct chewing and swallowing, eliminates negative habits and trains the tongue and lips to rest in the correct position.

How successful is myofunctional therapy?

Success depends greatly on consistency and motivation. We always say, "You get out what you put in!" For children, its integral that the parents take on a supportive role in the therapy. Reversing and repairing dysfunctions that have been developed over many years takes time. In motivated individuals, the success rate for habituation is excellent and noticeable improvement is generally noted within a few weeks.

Is myofunctional therapy only for children?

Myofunctional therapy can be beneficial at any age! It is never too late to correct poor oral habits and to start breathing more efficiently! Early treatment while in the growth stages results in the best possible outcome, however treatment can be beneficial with all ages when clients are motivated and compliant with exercises.

When should I seek treatment?

At MyoCentric, we typically see patients aged 3 and older. That being said, the earlier treatment begins, the better. It is important to correct OMDs (Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders) because they will cause more damage to the orofacial complex the longer they are left unaddressed. It can be confusing navigating where to start. ENT for a sleep study? Orthodontist for expansion? We pride ourselves on helping our clients create a game plan toward a healthier being. Even if treatment does not begin with us!

Should myofunctional therapy occur before or after orthodontic treatment?

Each case is patient specific and will be evaluated thoroughly before we make recommendations about starting myofunctional therapy. Our goal is to work with your orthodontist (or one of the incredible airway-centered providers that we liase with!) and their treatment plan to provide you the best possible outcome. In some cases it is beneficial to start myofunctional therapy before orthodontic treatment and in other cases we are unable to start treatment until orthodontic treatment has been completed. Myofunctional therapy can often be completed during orthodontic treatment depending which appliances are in the mouth.

Do I need myofunctional therapy before or after I have a frenectomy/tongue-tie release?

Both! It is extremely important to receive myofunctional therapy both before and after undergoing the frenectomy procedure. Prior to a tongue-tie release, myofunctional therapy aids in retraining and strengthening the orofacial muscles as well as promoting neuromuscular re-education. When the orofacial muscles are prepared properly, it ensures the best surgical outcome and will aid in preventing tissue from reattaching after the frenectomy.

How do I get started?

Feel free to reach out to us to have a complimentary 15 minute consultation to answer any questions and see if therapy may be right for you or your child prior to booking a full comprehensive evaluation.

Why do I need a comprehensive evaluation?

A comprehensive evaluation must be completed prior to therapy so we can discuss your areas of need and concerns on a deeper level. This thorough assessment will set the foundation to design a customized plan of care for you to achieve best treatment outcomes.

How many therapy sessions will I need?

The length of treatment and amount of sessions varies from case to case, depending on your unique needs and how much support you need along the way. Our comprehensive evaluation will help determine the approximate length of care you might need, but this ranges from 10 sessions to 15 sessions or 9-12 months.

Do you accept my insurance?

We are out-of-network providers and do not work with insurance.  However, if you would like to receive a superbill for the services rendered, you can submit this to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Claims and correspondence with insurance will take place directly between you and your insurance company.  Please note that reimbursement varies by insurance provider.

What payments do you accept?

Acceptable payments include major credit cards and debit cards (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX, Discover), Flex-Spending Accounts (FSA), Health-Savings Accounts (HSA), direct transfer with Zelle or Venmo

How long is the therapy program and what are the rates?

The first step is a comprehensive evaluation, which takes 60-90 minutes and includes a full detailed report of our findings. The therapy program is tailored to each client’s needs based on this evaluation. It typically entails a commitment of meeting every 2 weeks for approximately 45 minute sessions. Between these sessions, the client is to conduct daily active and passive exercises which work on achieving the goals of myofunctional therapy.

The Evaluation cost is $175.

The Full Program for ages 6yrs + typically 10 -12 sessions the therapy cost is $2300.

The Myo-Tots Program for ages 3-5yrs typically 6-8 sessions the therapy cost is $1050.

Are the sessions online or in-person?

All sessions are held via Telehealth. Once your appointment has been confirmed you will receive a link for us to connect via our practice management system. You will be shipped a kit of materials that will aid in the myofunctional exercises. If you would prefer that the comprehensive evaluation be held in person, please contact us to discuss!

Is online treatment effective?

Absolutely, yes!  With technological advances (and good lighting!), we are able to provide the same quality treatment via Telehealth as if we were in the same room.

If I do not live in California, can I still work with you?

Each individual state has its own legalities surrounding telehealth. Please contact us and we can look into this!
